 Definition: A number from 1 to 6 or higher, ranked from headwaters to river terminus, that designates the relative position of a stream or stream segment in a drainage basin network. First-order streams have no discrete tributaries; the junction of two first-order streams produces a second-order stream; the junction of two second-order streams produces a third-order stream; etc.
