 Definition: A protein attached to the membrane of the rough endoplasmic reticulum which helps ferry other proteins that are destined to be secreted out of the cell into the rough endoplasmic reticulum. It does this by binding with an SRP ("signal-recognition particle": a protein-RNA complex) that has previously attached itself to the lead end of the protein while the protein is still being synthesized.
